Making Heirloom Jewellery Modern

We have a lot of customers who have inherited jewellery from late grandparents or parents.  Many of these wish to reuse the metal in their own jewellery and this is something we have specialised in for many years.  In a workshop like ours, with all the necessary equipment on site, we are able to melt down old precious metals and reform it into new jewellery.

However, jewellery trends change and for the last 10 years or so, white metals such as platinum, white gold or palladium has been the choice for 95% of engagement or wedding jewellery.   Compare this figure to the early to mid 1900’s and we’d notice that is was completely the opposite.  The vast majority of wedding bands were either 18ct or 22ct yellow gold.

So, there are an increasing number of clients who are faced with the problem of wanting to use their Grandmothers yellow gold ring to form their wedding ring to match their white metal engagement ring.

Many shops will just simply offer to Rhodium-Plate  the yellow gold creation, but as with any form of electro-plating this will have a limited lifespan and the yellow will soon shine through the fine white coating.

At RTFJ, we have many different ideas to ensure the ring is fit for purpose.  After all, do you want to constantly have a ring re-treated?  Not really…

This ring pictured was a solution to exactly this situation.  We melted down the 22ct & 18ct wedding bands from both of the bride’s late-grandmothers wedding rings, to make a new yellow band.  Then we made a PLATINUM shim (or thin outer band) and soldered it to the outside.

Now, when the bride wears the band, all that can be seen is the white of the Platinum. But to the wearer, or when taken off, the sentimental yellow gold is visible a constant reminder of the jewellery their loved-ones had so much joy from.
